Contactforum ‘Justus Lipsius and Natural Philosophy” (30 November 2007, Prof. dr. Fernand Hallyn) Whereas the humanist scholar Justus Lipsius (1547-1606) is most widely known for his advocacy of Neostoicism in the history of moral and political philosophy, his natural philosophy and its influence on early modern science have yet to be fully articulated. Taking Lipsius’ Physiologia Stoicorum (Antwerp, 1604) as its focal point, this volume crafts a new interpretation of Lipsius’ place in intellectual history. His treatise represents more than a simple revival of ancient Stoic physics because it also owes much to Christianity, Aristotelianism, Platonism, and even Hermetism. The present volume, consisting of eight contributions based on papers read at a Contactforum held in Brussels on 30 November 2007 under the auspices of the Royal Academy of Belgium, intends to offer a new synthesis of Lipsius’ Neostoic thought and its influence in European philosophy. Taking Lipsius’ Physiologia Stoicorum (Antwerp, J. Moretus, 1604) as its focal point, this volume crafts a new interpretation of Lipsius’ place in intellectual history. For his treatise represents more than a simple revival of ancient Stoic physics; it also owes much to Christianity, Aristotelianism, Platonism, and even Hermetism. The present volume of eight contributions is based on papers read at an international conference organised by the Centre for History of Science (Ghent University) as part of the project “Re-evaluation of the Sciences in the Low Countries in the Renaissance” (GOA 12.517.03). The meeting was held as a Contactforum in Brussels on 30 November 2007 under the auspices of the Royal Academy of Belgium. The editors are very grateful to the contributors of this volume for their patience in awaiting its publication. Since, due to the painful death of its intellectual father, Prof. Fernand Hallyn, the preparation and publication of this volume encountered some substantial delay. Special thanks are due to Kuni Sakamoto for his invaluable help in editing. This volume is warmly dedicated to the memory of Fernand Hallyn (1945-2009), long standing and eminent member of the Royal Academy of Belgium. May this final result of the Contactforum “Justus Lipsius and Natural Philosophy” be a token worthy of his intellectual parenthood and ‘energeia’.
