About
The Center for the History of Philosophy and Science was founded in 1998 under the name Center for Medieval and Renaissance Natural Philosophy. From its inception, the guiding idea was to unite historians of both philosophy and science in a single research center so as to investigate the evolution of natural philosophy as well as the emergence of the scientific disciplines in their modern form.
Within the global academic landscape, the Center for the History of Philosophy and Science is unique in its choice to study philosophy and science as historically intertwined phenomena. The scholars working at the Center study the entire history of natural philosophy from its Aristotelian roots up to its modern transformations into the various specialized natural sciences. The Center’s expertise lies however most prominently in the medieval and early modern periods.
The members of the Center for the History of Philosophy and Science are as international as is the network within which they function. Among other things, they publish the journal "Early Science and Medicine" and the book series "Medieval and Early Modern Science."
Members include Paul Bakker, Sander de Boer, Davide Cellamare, Hiro Hirai, Femke Kok, Cees Leijenhorst, Christoph Lüthy, Carla Rita Palmerino, Doina-Cristina Rusu, M.P. Seevinck, Alexis Smets, Michiel Streijger, Sanne Stuur, Adam Takahashi and Hans Thijssen.
